The Flying Classroom utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to architectural design, where the physical space acts as a medium of communication, triggering the occupant’s senses in an immersive spatial experience that transmits the content/ story of the occupied space.
Project Information:
Das Fliegende Klassenzimmer
Type: Immersive learning environment
Design Year: 2018
Location: Airport Erfurt-Weimar
Concept & Spatial design: Hala Ghatasheh & Roy Müller
Overview:
The project was initiated by Förderverein Spiel- und Freizeitplätze der Generationen in Erfurt e.V, with the aim of providing an out-of-school learning environment for school kids in the 3rd & 4th grades, to teach them about the evolution and history of flying. The Flying Classroom is to be realized inside of an Il-18 airplane, located at the Erfurt-Weimar Airport.
Design:
The spatial design offers a configurable environment that integrates the physical aspects of the Iljuschin 18, and weaves a story around its features with balanced integration of interactive media allowing the occupants of the space to influence it. This transforms their roles from passive consumers of information to active participants and authors of their own spatial stories.
